Camera Accessories
Quality over quantity, these accessories have held up throughout the years and endured indiscriminate abuse. Purchasing quality products may cost more initially but will save you money in the long run, often made from better materials accompanied by a manufacturer warranty.
Peak Design - In my humble opinion, this company makes the best camera gear. Each product is incredibly well though out, light weight and durable. I have their straps, slings, clips, covers and camera bag ( all of which have survived years of abuse ). I highly recommend investing in their products!
Mefoto - I have both the Roadtrip and Backpacker tripods. The backpacker is roughly half the size of the Roadtrip but they are considerably lighter than other tripods I have owned in the past. They hold up very well in the elements as long as you allow them to dry out after expose to water and clean them after exposure to sand. Just don’t pack them on your carry on bag, Ive only been stopped flying out of Bali ( but they made a huge deal out of it ).
SanDisk - Extreme portable storage. A Gnarbox is in the near future but until then this semi-rugged 1TB external storage has proved to be a great way to securely hold photos.
Canon Battery - There are multiple off-brand batteries that you can buy on Amazon that hold up for a year or two but Ive had the same three Canon Brand rechargeable batteries since I bought the camera six years ago.
Pelican Card Case - I may be addicted to Pelican cases, housing quite a few in the garage. Their cases are tried and true and built to withstand anything, same goes for this memory card holder. I figured the memory cards are the most precious cargo on any trip or hike, so treat them as such.
GoPro Accessories
Again, Quality over quantity. GoPros are built to survive extreme elements and the cameras aren’t cheap, so you shouldn’t buy the cheap knock off accessories. I have experienced leaks in the cheap cases, rust in the cheap attachments and breaks in the harnesses. Spend a little more and make sure you get the shot and your GoPro survives the trip.
Litra - The Litra Torch has three brightness settings ( 800, 450, 100 Lumens ) and is waterproof to 20M. This is a great dive and Jungle GoPro enhancement. The lights get hot after continued use and should be powered down intermittently. Litra make diffuser attachments for the torch and should be used if photographing any wildlife ( also don’t point the light directly at the animals in an effort not to temporarily blind or inflict permanent damage to your subject ). These little lumen cubes are durable and rechargeable.
Knekt - Great water accessories that don’t rust out. The Dome port and trigger allow you to get partitioned shots ( above and below water ). The dive poll floats and can be built out as long as you’d like it to be. I usually built the pole out about 5 ft allowing me to get shots or video of reef dwellers without disturbing them too much.
GoPro - I have bought suction mounts, head straps and countless other mounting systems and filters from GoPro that have held up. They are far more sturdy than the $5 alternative on Amazon. If your just toting the camera around on a walk or using on on dry land, try the cheaper options. You wouldn’t want to loose your GoPros in the ocean or rivers trying to save $10.
Peakdesign - GoPro Mount for the Peakdesign capture clip is great way to mount your GoPro or Karma while participating in whatever ( non aquatic ) activity.
Joby - lightweight compact playable arms that can be used for a tripod, light mount or whatever you see fit.
